How I Became a Reseller

On any busy given day, running from one room to another while changing sheets, taking a laundry basket down to the washer, spraying down the bathroom to start the weekly pee floor wipe down from the wonderful aim boys have I received a Poshmark notification: “Congrats! Your item just sold to ….”

I froze. I had downloaded the app a couple weeks before with the intention of downsizing my closet and giving my beloved used clothes and accesories a new home to pay off debt. I posted an adorable ratan clutch I bought for a Barbie pop up that I never really intended to use again. Sure, I could keep it in my closet for years until an event that begged for a ratan purse with bright Barbie pink accesories came up again, but realistically, I knew it was far too garish for my style. I posted a few pictures of it next to my delicious pancakes at the Barbie Bar, wrote a fun description about how cute it was, and left it at that. When it sold 10 days later, I was so surprised but how could I be? The clutch was beyond adorable, it was in excellent condition, and I listed it for half the price I paid for it at Last Chance a few weeks prior.

I looked up the directions on Poshmark for completing my first sale, and it was suprisingly easy. I sent the package off through the post office and waited for my funds to go through. A few days later I saw a new email congratulating me on a perfect 5 star sale. Immediately seeing how easy it was to get rid of my things for extra cash, I posted another item. Then another. Then I bought an adorable Betsey Johnson dress I had every intention to style with a chic black blazer and Doc Marten’s, but ended up posting it and making a $20 profit. I was basically paid to shop… That’s when that bulb went on in my head and I said – This is my jam.

Weeks went by without a sale and I didn’t mind because it wasn’t my main hobby or anything- then, I lost my Delivery Driver Gig due to a traffic infraction…funnily a speeding ticket I got while delivering. I was devasted because I was relying on it for extra income to pay bills.

I realized I needed to take my reselling hobby seriously and took my last earnings from my driver gig and used them towards some thrifted items. I posted the items I bought consistently and quickly realized the hard work it was but I also realized how much I loved going to thrift stores. They’re full of cool, fun, and unbelievable thrifted items to show off to my growing list of followers. The validation of my good taste was actually turning me a profit. I was consistently selling my own items and items I thrifted for just as much as I made standing around fast food joints waiting for other’s people’s food. Now, is it always fun? No. There are times I just want to give it all back to the thrift and say “Thanks but I’ve had enough”. Then I walk in to that same thrift and find something that I find absolutely precious and I’m hooked again.
